Broken Pottery

One of our friends is an accomplished potter.  One day while visiting his studio I asked him about these nicely thrown pots that were in his "trash can".  Well, the "trash can" was his clay recycler, not trash!  After being duly corrected, I asked why he was "recyling" these pots.  Turns out he would try to throw them as tall and thin as possible, then when they were dry, he would carefully break them to check the thickness.  Later in the day, the diffused glass windows allowed the sun to highlight the pots, fortunately I had the 4x5 out in the car.
